Saturday February 15 2025 - Gring's Mill Recreation Area

We will hike on the flat, gravel Union Canal Towpath beside the Tulpehocken Creek.

Meeting place: 9:30a.m. at Gring’s Mill Recreation Area parking lot.

Directions: Route 222 to Broadcasting Road exit. Go east on Broadcasting and turn right on Tulpehocken Rd. Gring’s Mill will be on your left.

5.5 moderate miles

Hike through scenic and historic Oley farmland. We will pass Reiff and DeTurk homesteads and the location of the Moravian School. This should be a scenic walk. If it's a cold day, bundle up since this is an Oley Road Hike!

An easy in & out 

We will hike the Union Canal Trail. We’ll go as far as we want then turn and come back. Heavy snow or rain will cancel.

From Route 222 take the Papermill Rd exit. Turn Right onto Berkshire Rd. At the T, turn Left onto Tulpehocken Rd. Parking lot is on the right

Saturday January 25, 2024 - French Creek / Shed Road

6.75 mile oval loop                                    

From Shed Rd we will cross Rt. 345 and hike Lenape trail to Collier Trail, hike through Hopewell Village where we’ll have a modern bathroom break, a short walk on Hopewell Road to Buzzards Trail, Raccoon Trail and then the outer perimeter of Mill creek trail via Millers Point, to Lenape to cross Shed Road to go back to our cars. There is a long gradual hill towards the end of the hike, so we could possibly be bribed to reverse the direction of this hike. But there will still be 1024’ of elevation gain….

Extreme weather cancels this hike. Wear orange since hunting could take place in some permitted areas of the park. Bring lunch and a chair for lunch together after the hike or we can find a warm indoor spot/ restaurant.

Saturday January 18, 2024 - Peters Creek / Lake Ontelaunee

4-5 miles

We will hike along Peters Creek past the Grandmother Sycamore, Peter’s Creek Spring, and the Peters Family Graveyard. At Evansville Rd. we will loop back on the other side of the creek, across Maidencreek Rd. following a gravel track to Lake Ontelaunee looping back on a grassy track following the lake shoreline part of the way back. 4+ easy miles with one short hill.

Saturday January 11, 2025 - Antietam Lake Hike

4-5 moderate miles                                                                                                                                        

This hike begins at the Antietam Lake parking area at 10:00 am. We will hike to the Mudcatcher’s Trailhead and do an out and back. We will continue to the Angora Fruit Farm and wind our way back to the parking lot. We should see a few ruins along the way. The group may decide on a lunch option.

Saturday January 4, 2024 - Monocacy Hill Recreation Area

5 Moderately difficult miles ( with alternative)

Join our group as we hike once again through some of the well-marked trails of Monocacy Hill’s 428 acres. We will go down to the creek with the charming waterfall and up to the peak with beautiful views of the valley. We may also go by landmarks like the never-used railroad trestle and the homestead site of Sallie Shirey. Hiking boots/poles are recommended as the climb is a bit rocky. Wear orange because it is hunting season. Meeting place: 9:30 a.m. in Geiger Rd parking lot. Parking in lot is limited – if parking on the road, park on the side next to the recreation area, NOT across the street at residents’ houses.

Directions: From 422 coming from Reading use the jug handle to turn left onto Limekiln Rd. Turn right onto Monocacy Hill Rd, right again onto Geiger Rd and right into the parking lot.

Wednesday January 1, 2025 - Oren Hall Memorial Loop

Approx. 4 miles very hilly

Hills are quite moderate but, there are a lot. Very pleasant walk through the woods. Be aware this is a mountain biking trail. WEAR ORANGE TO BE SAFE. Heavy snow or rain will cancel. Light snow could be nice.

Meeting place: 9:30 AM at Holl’s Trailhead off Highland Road.

Directions: From State Hill Road turn left onto Brownsville Road. Turn right onto Highland Road at Spitlers Collision (approx. 1.7 miles). The road is not maintained and very rutty. The Trailhead in on the right.

Saturday December 28, 2024 - Swatara State Park

Approx. 6 miles

This hike will traverse both sides of the scenic Swatara Creek utilizing the Swatara Rail Trail and the Bear Hole Trail. It is mostly flat on well maintained surfaces.

1st Meeting place: 9 AM Old Church Rd parking at Blue Marsh

2nd Meeting place: 10 AM Sand Siding Trailhead, Route 443, Pine Grove

Directions: Take Route 443 west from Pine Grove. Continue past Route 81. Proceed another 3 -4 miles. Look for the Twin Grove Campsite on the right. Immediately past the campsite look for a dirt road to the left and travel down this road to the parking area. Snow/bad roads cancel.

4 or 6 miles, your choice.

Hike from Old Church Road off Route 183. Wear orange. Lunch is optional afterwards. It will be anb easy in-and-out hike. Heavy snow or rain will cancel.

Meeting place: 9:30 am from Old Church Road parking lot off of Route 183. Parking lot is on the left.

Directions: Take Route 183 North. Pass the Blue Marsh Restaurant. In about 2.5 miles -Turn Left onto Old Church Road. Parking lot is on the left

3-4 easy miles

We had such a good time last year, we’re doing it again! We’ll stroll through Wyomissing to check out the beautiful decorations. Hot refreshments and cookies in the parking lot as before!

Meeting place: 5:00 pm at the Knitting Mills Parking Lot, Penn Avenue & Park Road


Directions: Heading west on Penn Avenue through West Reading, turn right at Wawa onto Park Road, go 1⁄2 block, then left on Court Lane and left again into parking lot.

Saturday December 7, 2024 - Annual BCHC Christmas Party!! - Hike: Schuylkill River Trail Head in Birdsboro

Approx. 3-4 miles

Walk will take place on Schuylkill River Trail starting at trail head in Birdsboro.

Meeting place: 10:00 am Birdsboro Trail Head next to VFW on Armorcast Road

Directions: Take Route 345 into Birdsboro. At Turkey Hill make left onto Armorcast road. Trail head parking lot is on right side next to Birdsboro VFW on Armorcast Road. 

Club Member Party: See flyer for complete details - Those attending hike can walk to Birdsboro Memorial Hall from trailhead. Party attendees should park in lot indicated on flyer.

Saturday November 30, 2024 - Trexler Nature Preserve (Lehigh County)

9.3 strenuous miles


We will be hiking the Border Loop. This trail has many elevation changes, some steep. Beautiful views. Should take about 4 hours on the trail. Lunch options afterwards.

Directions: Take I-78E to 22E to 309N toward Schnecksville. Go about 5 miles and turn left onto Old Packhouse Rd. Go about 1 mile and turn right onto Orchard Rd. Parking lot on left.

Saturday November 23, 2024 - Green Lane Reservoir

5- 6 miles

A nice walk in Green Lane Park with water views, some ups and downs with some level areas. Make sure to bring your hiking poles. We'll discuss places to go to lunch afterwards.

DIRECTIONS: From Reading take Pricetown Road (Rte 12) to Breezy Corners and turn right on Rte 73 east. At Friedensburg Road traffic light, turn left, go past service station and turn left into shopping center parking lot.

1st MEET: 9:00 a.m. at Weis Shopping Center in Oley, along Rt. 73. Carpool to trailhead if you can as there is not a lot of parking space at the park.

2nd MEET: 9:30 am, parking lot off of Deep Creek Road/ Snyder Road

Directions: Leaving Oley Weis, turn left towards Boyertown follow Route 73 to Route 663 north. Stay on Rte 663 until you make a right onto Deep Creek Road. Follow Deep Creek Road, make a right at Snyder Road, go 1/10 mile and turn left into parking lot.

4 miles, moderate difficulty

Nice easy walk for the most part, few ascents for a good cardio workout.

Directions: Heading west on Penn Avenue in West Reading, turn left on 5th Ave/Museum Road. After crossing bridge, turn right on Parkside Drive S., then right again into museum parking lot.

Saturday November 16, 2024 - Birdsboro Preserve

4-mile loop, mid-range difficulty


We will hike the Birdsboro Preserve with several hills. The plan is to take Cocalico Double Track, then the Up and Over track, then Stinson Run Reservoir Trail back to the Rustic Park. Lunch afterwards at Annamarie’s on Main.

Meeting place: 9:30 a.m. at Rustic Park in Birdsboro

Directions: From 422 east, turn right on 345 to enter Birdsboro. After crossing river, stay on Furnace Street/Hay Creek Road. Drive approx. 1.5 miles to Rustic Park. Cross RR tracks and turn right into parking lot.
