Membership in the BCHC is $10.00 per person per year in order to receive the quarterly newsletter. Further information on membership can be obtained when attending a scheduled hike. Other subgroups within the BCHC are the "Thursday Wanderers." Most hikes are followed by a dinner stop. Our "traditional" early January hike along the Maiden Creek and country roads in the hills near Lenhartsville. This is an easy road hike with some nice views of the Maiden Creek and the hill country southeast of town. Eat at C.J. Hummel's afterward.

Polar Bear Dip Hike - Thursday January 1, 2009










6 miles

Hike about 4 miles on the country roads leading to Willow Springs Park to enjoy watching, or if you wish, PARTICIPATING in the annual Polar Bear Dip. Donations will be taken at the park for a Lebanon County charity. After the dip, we will hike 2 miles back to the restaurant (by 1:15 pm) for a Pork & Sauerkraut dinner, or whatever else you choose. Dress in layers for walking and standing on what could be a brisk cold morning. Maybe this year you will take the plunge?!?!?!

Bethlehem Area Hike - Saturday December 27, 2008

Approx 5 miles

Return to Bethlehem to hike along with the Blue Mountain Eagle Hiking Club members for 2 hikes. the first hike will be in Stockertown with a look at a really cool model railroad and a portion of the Plainfield Recreation Trail. The second hike will start and end at the overlook at Lehigh University (not the school Ron went to!), with a semi-guided hike through the campus and old downtown Bethlehem.

Note: Minimal cost to visit the model railroad. We will eat at Hartman's II Restaurant between the hikes.

Pottsville's Famous Yuengling Tour and Hike - Saturday December 20, 2008

Join Mark for his tour of Yuengling Brewery followed by a hike to Gramma's for lunch, then hike around town. This hike is a relaxing break during the holiday season. Tour is free, but lunch is your expense. (Reasonably priced!) Dress appropriately for the weather - layered.

Bethlehem's Christkindlmarkt/ Luminaria Night

Visit Bethlehem's holiday market of handmade crafts (approx $10.00 entrance fee), followed by dinner and a walking tour of Bethlehem's historic district on "luminaria night" when thousands of families decorate their walkways and properties with luminaria. Behtlehem was founded by Moravians on Christmas Eve in 1741.

Election Day - Veteran's Day Hike - Saturday November 8, 2008

Start at City Park and stop to visit the Veteran's Memorial Area. Then proceed to Pendora Park, Mineral Spring, Egelman's Dam, and on to the Pagoda. It will be a combination of road walking and woodlands seeing our city parks this "historical" week.

Fairmount Park and Laurel Hill Cemetery - Saturday October 18, 2008

View the confluence of the Wissahickon Creek into the Schuykill River followed by an approximate 4 mile circle hike in Fairmount Park on both sides of the Schuykill River. End with a tour of historical Laurel Hill Cemetery. This cemetery was the inspiration which led to the design and layout of our local Charles Evans Cemetery.

South Hills Park and Lebanon VA Hospital - Saturday October 11, 2008

4+ miles

Hike with the Blue Mountain Eagle Climbing Club. Members to explore a new area to most. On macadam trails, some paths through woods, sidewalk and gravel in the Lebanon area. Leisure hike through the and viewing the VA Hospital. Restrooms available. This will be a late afternoon hike, then we will go out for dinner. After dinner, we will follow Route 72 North to the Union Canal Tunnel Park where we may hike a bit. (Bring a flashlight.) Then we will take a full-moon boat ride through the canal and tunnel. This is the oldest existing transportation tunnel in the U.S.

This is a relatively flat hike on the densely wooded north side of the Beltzville Dam near Lehighton. After the hike, we can paddle or relax on the south side of the lake. Bring "viddles" (lunch) and your canoe or kayak, if desired. Bad weather is not good!

This hike is in state gamelands starting on Pinch Road and walking across the ridge to Dinosaur Rocks. Modest hills and off-road hiking in woodlands except for one long sunny section. (Unless, of course, it's a cloudy day!) Bring water.

Meet the leader at the Middle Creek Visitor's Center for a shuttle hike along the Horseshoe Trail between Pumping Station Road and the Middle Creek Preserve. Includes some hills with nice lookouts.

Pennside Ice Cream Hike - Sunday Evening July 20, 2008

Enjoy an "almost full moon" walk around the Pennside area. We will visit the new location of Fegeley's restaurant to see if any progress has been made on its restoration. We will also walk the trail behind the Antietam Valley Park & Recreation Center. All the walk is on level streets except for a short, level trail section. We can also "check out" the ducks in lake as we experienced last year! Return for ice cream, doggies, and burgers at Coney Tony's Pennside Drive In.

Saturday June 14, 2008 - Philadelphia Historical Tour and Train Ride

Approx. 5 mile city walk

Enjoy a train ride from the Norristown Elm St. Station into the “City of Brotherly Love” with an enjoyable walking tour of a city rich in American history. We’ll tour some interesting sites of Old City, Center City and nearby neighborhoods in the morning. Break for lunch near famous Headhouse Square and spend the afternoon at South Street to check out “where all the hippies meet”. Dress in comfortable clothes and comfortable shoes for walking on pavements. Rain or Shine! So bring rain gear if weather forecast drops!
COST: $10.00 round trip Septa train ride (price subject to rate increase) day of trip. Discounted round trip $8.25 by notifying hike leader by May 15. Discounted participants must pay leader for advance ticket since trip will not be canceled. Driving directions to the train station, maps of Philadelphia and the train schedules will be provided on the day of trip.

This is a circular hike on several rural, macadam, and gravel roads and passing by farms and wooded areas. This hike includes some hills. Optional lunch stop at the Kutztown Tavern.

Appalachian Trail at Lehigh Gap - Saturday May 17, 2008

Approximately 6 miles, difficult

We'll scale up the Summer trail section of the AT to see the fantastic 270 degree view, have lunch at a tree grove and head back. The Summer trail has on section where one muct grab the rock face and traverse horizontally about 10 feet. The drop is about 8 feet. Also some "clambering" on rocks is anticipated.

Ricketts Glen State Park - Saturday May 10, 2008

Celebrate Spring and hike one of Pennsylvania's most scenic hiking trails. Be sure to bring a camera and plenty of energy for this 7 mile hike with 21 waterfalls. Elevation gain of approximately 1,000 feet with one ascent and one descent. Terrain is rocky, slippery and descends steeply. Wear sturdy boots; bring water and lunch.

Note: This hike is in conjunction with BMECC.

Heritage Rail Trail County Park - Saturday May 3, 2008

8 miles, easy, flat trail

Established in 1992 and covering 176 acres, the Heritage Rail Trail County Park is 21 miles long and runs from the Mason Dixon Line to York. We will be walking the 8 mile section from Brillheart Station to Hanover Junction Station. This is a beautiful trail to see as we walk through Howard Tunnel, view a picnic grove with giant metal sculptures of bikes, visit the historic Hanover Junction Station, and ending with a restaurant stop at "Serentiy Station" located on the trail.

We will be leading a moderate, scenic, circuitous hike in the Wissahickon Gorge on trails and paths along the Wissahickon Creek. Carry water, snacks, and wear sturdy shoes. Optional restaurant stop on the way home.

Easter Morning Sunrise Service Hike - Sunday March 23, 2008

4 miles (moderate pace)

We will hike to the Easter morning sunrise service at the Mt. Penn Fire Tower, sponsored by the Greater Reading Council of Churches. This hike is a tradition in honor of hiking club member Paul Lehman who started this hike years ago. Wear warm clothes, sturdy shoes, and bring a flashlight. Easter hat is optional!

Happy 100th Birthday Pagoda! - Saturday March 8, 2008

This hike will take us to one of the leader's favorite local landmarks. We will take a break to learn a little history about the Pagoda. (Refreshments will be on sale here.) Then we will hike the railroad bed that was used to deliver supplies for the construction of the Pagoda. Come prepared for the weather.

Sadsbury Woods Preserve - Saturday January 19, 2008
















4 to 5 miles

Loop hike at Natural Lands Trust's Sadsbury Woods Preserve. This small 500 acres are located in Mid-Chester County near the junction of routes PA 10 & US 30, 15 miles south of the meeting place. Hunting is only allowed by special permit, but be sure to wear your orange jackets.

Meeting Place: 9:30 am, Clock Tower Shopping Center (Routes 10 & 23 on west end of Morgantown) We will carpool at this spot because of limited spaces at the preserve.

Lenhartsville Loop - Saturday January 12, 2008

5 miles

Our "traditional" early January hike along the Maiden Creek and country roads in the hills near Lenhartsville. This is an easy road hike with some nice views of the Maiden Creek and hill country southeast of the town. Eat at Hummel's afterwards.

Centre Township - Saturday January 5, 2008

5 to 6 miles

Hike the back roads of Centre Township. Be prepared for hills, some traffic, and questionable weather. Some nice views. Most have never explored this area, so be adventurous!

Meeting place and directions: 10:00 am at the gravel parking lot on Main St. in Centerport, across from the Grange and next to the pizza shop. Go to route 61 North, turn left onto Mohrsville Road, drive 0.7 miles and turn left onto Main St., drive 2.3 miles into Centerport.

New Year's Hike / Polar Bear Dip / Pork & Sauerkraut Dinner - Tuesday January 1, 2008

We will take macadam country roads between Stouchsburg and Millardsville, going along the Tully 4.3 miles up to view the annual Polar Bear Dip at the Myerstown Quarry at noon. Afterwards, we'll hike back 1.4 miles to our cars, with an optional church stop for pork & sauerkraut, buffet style in Robesonia. Cost: $8.00. Dress in layers, bring your camera, and also a bathing suit and towel if you want to become a bear cub! Outdoor restrooms at the church. Donation requested at the quarry to benefit a Lebanon County charity.
