Membership in the BCHC is $10.00 per person per year in order to receive the quarterly newsletter. Further information on membership can be obtained when attending a scheduled hike. Other subgroups within the BCHC are the "Thursday Wanderers." Most hikes are followed by a dinner stop. A jaunt through what’s left of the Chester County woodland along the Horseshoe Trail.

Travel from Green Lane just East of Route 100 to Warwick County Park.


Note: There will be one stream crossing that will require crossing over the stream via a log...may be crossing by balancing over the log or shimmying/ sliding over it. Be prepared!!

Saturday October 29, 2011 - Let's Try it Again - Delaware Water Gap

8.5 miles


Appalachian Trail Hike along top of ridge with some “ups” and rocks, but great views (no leaves) winding down a steep and rocky decent to gap. Recommend sturdy hiking boots, water and we will stop on the trail for lunch. This is the leader’s 4th attempt to lead this hike without being rained or snowed out! As before, snow or rain cancels.

This will be the first leg of the Horseshoe Trail Series. We’ll start at George Washington’s Headquarters in Valley Forge. It will be a great time for a walk in the park and to see the HQ where Georgy slept! This will be a shuttle hike with vehicles.

Saturday October 8, 2011 - Mount Pisgah Plane

4 Short but Steep & Strenuous Miles – Difficult


For the adventurous or the just plain foolish, we will climb the 2322 foot, 29 degree Mount Pisgah Plane of the former Switchback Gravity Railroad, in Old Mauch Chunk (aka Jim Thorpe), Carbon County. This long climb, though strenuous, abounds in history. The Switchback was Pennsylvania’s first railroad, and the second in the USA. We will see the remains of the original “wagon road” and continue down Packer Hill into town for lunch. The group may split up here depending on size, meeting an hour later in front of the Mauch Chunk Opera House. After lunch it’s up Broadway onto the former, now abandoned “bus road”, returning to the parking area. This hike is short, but steep and strenuous and is rated difficult for that reason.

Directions: Hill Road is the only right hand turn off Broadway heading west from downtown Jim Thorpe, and is located right next to the Mauch Chunk Opera House.

Sunday October 2, 2011 - Arts/Park in Allentown (Series VIII)

8th Street Bridge/Historical Society

This will be a 1.5 mile loop walk through Allentown Park, crossing the 8th Street Bridge to enjoy the fall foliage. We’ll visit the historical society and return to the Arts walk, then enjoy the 3pm Allentown Symphony Concert (featuring the Empire Brass); followed by a “brew” at the Allentown brewworks.

Saturday September 17 - Money Rocks County Park in Lancaster County

approx 6 miles

Come out for a relaxing hike. Anyone who finds the lost money may surely keep it! We will enjoy the shaded woodland trails on this newly expanded area. There are lots of rocks and some moderate hills. We will be sure to see some Amish buggies.

Join us for a leisurely hike with a bit of history. We will see a canon, a tank, Fort Zellers historic area and a cemetery. All road and pavement walking, with nice views and quiet scenes. Bring snacks and water, extra if it is a hot day.

Saturday September 3, 2011 - Hamburg-er Bike Trip

Join the “Warm-Hand” hiker and his girl for biking on the Bartram (flat) trail for approx 12-15 miles, then into Hamburg to get a “taste of Hamburg-er.” Bring lunch money.

approx 4.5 miles


The ‘Spirit of the Tuscarora Trail’ is described in the park brochure as difficult with varying terrain and land features. It meanders along Tuscarora Lake and Locust Creek through deciduous forest, successional field, rhododendron thicket, and a wetland meadow. Wear boots and bring water. There is an opportunity for swimming and boating at the lake. Bring your own picnic lunch to eat at the park.

Hike will be on a section of this thirty mile trail maintained by the Wilmington Trail Club. This section connects the Horseshoe Trail with the Mason Dixon Trail and continues to Delaware’s Brandywine Creek State Park. Our path will take us on an abandoned Trolley bed, an old RR bed, through Downingtown to the Struble Trail parking area at Dorlans Mill Road.

This will be a loop hike of moderate difficulty from Egelman’s Park to Antietam Lake. We will take the yellow blaze trail most of the way to Antietam Lake. The return will be by a different route, paralleling an orchard at one point, passing Kuegler’s Roost (the 2nd stone cellar of the day), and passing just behind the tower before our return.

Saturday June 25, 2011 -Arendtville - Shippensburg Rd.-Shippensburg Road to Pine Furnace State Park Appalachian Trail History / Ice Cream Walk

This will be an EZ AT hike starting along a ridge and ending in a mostly downhill ramble. There will be a lunch/snack stop on the trail. We will pass Camp Micheaux which was a prisoner of war camp for German soldiers. We will also see the Iron Master’s Mansion which served as a stop on the Underground Railroad. The hike will end with a visit at the new AT Museum. Be sure to wear good hiking boots. Bring water and lunch/snack. Optional dinner stop.

Today’s hike will be a joint hike with the Elverson Walking Club in the Baptism Creek area of French Creek State Park. This will be a woodland walk with some moderate hills and rocky trails. We will explore this natural area and visit the old pavilion, as well as stopping to visit the old Bethesda Meeting House and Cemetery. Also checking out the old millrace, dam site and look for lingering wildflowers. Lunch stop will follow, of course!

Saturday June 4, 2011 -TRAIN RIDE TO PHILADELPHIA AND PENN’S LANDING TOUR

5 + miles approx.

We’ll try this again and hope for cooler weather this year! Enjoy a train ride from the Norristown Elm Street Station into the “City of Brotherly Love,” followed by an enjoyable walking tour of Penn’s Landing and Head House Square. Our walk will take us from the Market East Train Station to Penn’s Landing to check out the various activities the seaport has to offer, such as Independence Seaport Museum, USS Olympia, a submarine, River Ferry Links to New Jersey and others. (Be aware some may have admission fees.) Eateries are along Penn’s Landing and the nearby Head House Square area. Dress comfortably with very comfortable shoes for walking on pavements. Bring sunscreen since we’ll be by the water.

NOTE: This trip is Rain or Shine, so bring rain gear if weather forecast is drops!

Saturday April 23, 2011 - Sweet Arrow Lake County Park, Pine Grove

approx. 4 – 6 miles



The leaders will travers a very moderate hike along the lake, with woodland paths and some roads. Sweet Arrow Lake is a 60 acre lake built as a water supply for the Union Canal. The hike will end with crossing a footbridge onto a boardwalk along the side of a deep gorge. Optional lunch stop at the Red Lion Café on Rte. 443 in Deturksville.

Sunday April 17, 2011 - Parks & Arts of Allentown (Part VII)


We will walk one hour in the park, enjoy the blooming spring trees; then a short drive to the FREE parking deck at 6th and Linden Streets. Attend the 3 pm Concert of the Allentown Symphony (mention 20% hiker’s discount.) After concert, a short walk to the Brewworks where you will receive a 10% food discount with your concert ticket.

Saturday April 16, 2011 - Birdsboro Watershed

approx. 7.5 to 8 miles


We will explore the northeastern side of the Birdsboro watershed. There will be hills to climb. Some terrain will be rocky and uneven, though generally on good trails. We will also circle the scenic Birdsboro reservoir. Some fine views if the leaves have not come out.

Directions to hike: Take the former Route 82 (Furnace Street) south through Birdsboro, and continue till the road “wash-out” at the Hay Creek. Park in the parking area there.

Saturday April 9, 2011 - French Creek State Park

Meet our leader at the west boat launch at Hopewell Lake. Hike includes sections of the Horseshoe Trail and other park trails. Expect lots of rocks and some hills. Opt. lunch at Exeter Restaurant.

Saturday April 2, 2011 - Wyomissing Creek Hike

approx. 5 easy miles


Our illustrious leaders will lead a hike along the Wyomissing Creek. The hike is on several “rediscovered’ park trails and will be an easy walk with few hills. Lunch later for those interested.

Saturday March 26, 2011 - Let's try it again -Delaware Water Gap

8.5 miles


Appalachian Trail hike along top of ridge with some “ups”; some rocks but great views (no leaves) winding down a steep and rocky decent to gap. Recommend sturdy hiking boots, water and we will stop on the trail for lunch. This is Ellen’s 3rd attempt to lead this hike without being rained out!

UPDATE 3/26/11: Due to cold and icy/snowy weather conditons, in past week this hike was postponed again! Hikers traversed the Bartrum Trail Part II (Port Clinton to Auburn) for an enjoyable day. Delaware Hike will take place at a later date!

Saturday March 19, 2011 - Bartrum Trail to Port Clinton

7 ½ miles


Follow Richard and check out the Bartrum Trail all the way to Port Clinton. Return will be on the A.T. to old Rt. 122, followed by the “Boy Scout Trail”, then back to the park along the old canal bed.

Saturday March 12, 2011 - Mount Gretna / Lebanon Valley Rail Trail

5 to 7 miles


Randy will lead a hike in the Mt. Gretna area. Hike on the Lebanon Valley Rail Trail and other area trails. Carry water and snacks, we’ll lunch later at The Hide-Away Restaurant for those wishing to dine.


Traveling directions: From the south, take turnpike to Rt. 322 to Rt. 72 and go north to Rt.117. At the end of the ramp go left for 2+ miles to parking on the left. From the East take Rt. 419 to Cornwall area to Rt. 117

Saturday February 26, 2011 - Lower Perkiomen Park / Phoenixville

approx. 8 miles


We will hike from Oaks to downtown Phoenixville using a spur of the Schuylkill River Trail and some roads. This is mostly a flat hike along the Perkiomen creek and the old Schuylkill canal. Winter conditions and weather may alter this hike. Dress warm, bring a snack. Lunch will be our reward once we reach Phoenixville.

Meeting place: 9:00 am, Boscov’s East (east end of lot), Business Rt. 422 East, Exeter Twp; Hike will start from Lower Perkiomen Park around 10:00 am

Saturday February 19, 2011 - West Side, East Side, All Around Reading Towne

approx.6 miles


Come out to hike with the leaders to see one of the leader's house from every angle! There will be two separate in-and-out hikes. The first hike will be on the unfinished Neversink Trail located on the East side of the Schuylkill River. Then we will trek to Heritage Park to see Jackson’s Landing, an old bridge abutment, and foundations from the glory days of the canal. We will proceed to the end as far as we can go then turn around and return to RACC. Next we will travel across the Schuylkill to the West Shore and hike past the Bertolet Fishing Pier, walk a section of the West Reading Bike Trail, and travel under a bypass tunnel.

Saturday February 12, 2011 - Oley & Pike Townships

6.5 miles

Generally easy walking on roads with 1 real hill. Among the historic sites that we will pass are the Abraham Levan Homestead lot of the 1750’s, Lesher, Peter, Pott and Hoch homesteads, the Hoch-Peter mill, and the Jacob Keim Homestead of the 1750’s, now owned by the Historic Preservation Trust of Berks County.

Sunday February 6, 2011 -Nolde Forest Environmental Center & Middle Creek Wildlife Area

5 miles


Short, easy trek to the open Mansion, watch family films then head to Middle Creek to see swans and/or snow geese, then approx. 5 miles fairly difficult hike on Millstone Trail. Bring boots for snow, money for lunch & beer and $10 for driver (100 miles total drive)

Saturday Feb 5, 2011 - FRENCH CREEK PARK / BUZZARD’S TRAIL

approx 6 ½ miles

The leader will lead a loop hike at French Creek State Park on Buzzard’s trail, a loop hike with two tails. (Yes, not trails - this is not a typo error!) The trails are rocky and hilly. Snow and ice will cancel this hike. Lunch following at Exeter Family Restaurant.

Saturday January 22.2011 - Laureldale / Muhlenberg Township Hike

5 to 6 miles moderate

Join our leader as he leads a hike on Yoder’s Hill, along with roads, streets, woodland paths and rails to trails. Possibly some “bushwhacking” in areas of Laureldale Borough and Muhlenberg Township. Varied terrain with hills involved. Wear sturdy shoes and dress appropriately. Snow or rain will cancel.


Meeting place: 10:00 am, Dominic Manzella Recreational Park parking lot, above Manor Care Nursing home, just off Elizabeth Ave in Laureldale


Directions: Traveling north on Bus. Rte 222 (5th St. Highway) in Muhlenberg, turn right at the Hess gas station onto Elizabeth Ave. and follow to just above the 2100 block uphill on left side.
