Membership in the BCHC is $10.00 per person per year in order to receive the quarterly newsletter. Further information on membership can be obtained when attending a scheduled hike. Other subgroups within the BCHC are the "Thursday Wanderers." Most hikes are followed by a dinner stop. Join our leader as he explores the Six Penny area of French Creek and look for animal tracks in the snow! This will be a circle hike on woodland trails with lots of rocks and some hills. If the weather is “Iffy” call to confirm if hike will take place.

Saturday Jaunuary 1, 2011 - New Year's Day Polar Bear Dip

4 1/2 miles

We will hike country roads between Stouchsburg and Millardsville to witness the annual Polar Bear Dip that takes place at 12:00 noon at the Myerstown Quarry, located in Willow Springs Park. Those taking the plunge are encouraged to bring a bathing suit and towel. We will hike

back to our car afterwards along the Tully. Then we can go for Pork & Sauerkraut! (Leader will check out options closer to the hike). Dress in layers for a brisk beginning to The New Year.

Saturday November 20, 2010 - Pequea Creek in Silver Mine Park, Lancaster County

approx. 5 miles


Come and join the group as they traverse trails along the beautiful Pequea Creek in Silver Mine Park, Lancaster County. This park was once home to a trailer park and campground and contains a real silver mine. We will start the hike along a hike/bike trail and continue through fields, woods, around the pond and a geology walk through the old mine area.

Saturday November 13, 2010 - St Lawrence Mountain Hike

approx. 5-6 miles


Ever wonder about that mountain at the base of the Antietam Valley shopping center in St Lawrence? This may be a new area to some club members. There are some nice views, which means hiking hills to get to them! Since this area used to be the water source for the St. Lawrence Borough, some trails could be wet. Also some rocky sections. Wear hiking boots and don’t forget snacks and water.

A 1.5 mile loop walk through Allentown Park, crossing 8th Street bridge, then returning to the Arts Walk, Art Museum (free), then enjoying the 3 pm Allentown Symphony Concert, followed by a “brew” at the Allentown Breworks.

Saturday October 16, 2010 - Orwigsburg Scenic Hike with Some History

We will do a 6 mile loop hike out over the ridge and down into the valley, coming into town to see some historic buildings. We will be passing a cemetery, nursing home, school, ball fields and through two wooded areas. Hopefully we will find some benches to take a break for some snacks. Bring water, snacks and dress in layers for a lovely fall day (we hope), with colored leaves.

Saturday October 9, 2010 - Mount Pisgah Plane

4 Short but Steep & Strenuous Miles - Difficult


For the adventurous or the just plain foolish, we will climb the 2322 foot, 29 degree Mount Pisgah Plane of the former Switchback Gravity Railroad, in Old Mauch Chunk (aka Jim Thorpe), Carbon County. This long climb, though strenuous, abounds in history. The Switchback was Pennsylvania’s first railroad, and the second in the USA. We will see the remains of the original “wagon road” and continue down Packer Hill into town for lunch. The group may split up here depending on size, meeting an hour later in front of the Mauch Chunk Opera House. After lunch it’s up Broadway onto the former, now abandoned “bus road”, returning to the parking area. This hike is short, but steep and strenuous and is rated difficult for that reason.

Directions: Hill Road is the only right hand turn off Broadway heading west from downtown Jim Thorpe, and is located right next tothe Mauch Chunk Opera House.

Saturday October 2, 2010 - Hopewell Lake at French Creek State Park

5 miles


Clyde will lead a five mile walk beginning at the West Boat Launch and climbing to the top of Mt. Pleasure, passing the site of a former Lean-To. Continuing downhill on the 1974 route of the Horse Shoe Trail, we will cross Rt. 345 into Hopewell National Park land and visit the remains of the Harrison Lloyd Farm before returning to the center of the Hopewell Furnace where we rejoin the current route of the Horse Shoe Trail, completing our loop around Hopewell Lake.

Saturday August 21, 2010 - Desilting Basin & Kelly's Lock Hike

About 5 miles


A moderate circuitous hike of about 5 miles in the Muhlenberg Twp Parks system. Hike the old Schuylkill River desilting basin in a wooded area on unmarked trails. Divert off the trail to see Kelly’s Lock and then return to our starting point in the Laurel Run Recreational Park. Restaurant stop for lunch is optional afterwards.

DIRECTIONS: From Rt. 12 (Warren St. By-Pass) exit at River Road, then travel north on River Road for 1.6 miles to the park entrance on the right. Drive to end of lane to the parking area across from the skating lodge.

Saturday July 24 ,2010 - Train Ride and Philadelphia Penn's Landing Tour

Approx 5+ miles


Enjoy a train ride from the Norristown Elm St. Station into the “City of Brotherly Love” with an

enjoyable walking tour of Penn’s Landing and Head House Square. Our walk will take us from the Market East Train Station to Penn’s Landing to check out the various activities that the seaport has to offer. Plenty of places to see and things to do such as the Independence Seaport Museum, USS Olympia, a submarine, Duck Boat Rides, River Ferry Links to New Jersey and others. Be aware that some admission fees may be required and other things to see are free. Eateries are at some spots along Penn’s Landing and the nearby Headhouse Square area. Dress in comfortable clothes and very comfortable shoes for walking on pavements. Bring sunscreen since we’ll be by the water. This trip is rain or shine, so bring rain gear if the weather forecast is drops!


COST: $10.00 round trip off-peak Saturday fare for SEPTA train ride (price subject to change) if obtained day of trip. Contact leader for discount information on advance ticket sales.

Meeting place: 7:00 am, Boscov’s East Parking lot (east end of lot), Bus. Rt. 422 East, Exeter Twp, where we will car-pool to the Norristown Elm St Station to take the train. We will meet around 4:30 pm to take

the train back to Norristown unless another time is decided by the group on the day of the trip; last train

leaves Market East at 6:30 pm. Driving directions to the train station, maps of Philadelphia and the

schedule of train departures and arrivals will be provided on the day of the trip.

Spring into spring with an AT in/out hike from I-83 to the Shikellamy overlook. We will stop at Heartline campsight for lunch. Hiking boots required for all those pointy rocks and 2 sturdy legs for the 2 uphill climbs.

Approx 6 miles moderate


Hike past the 1935 Machemer Cabin; several 19th century charcoal hearths; nice vistas to the south from the A.T. and the Windsor Furnace remains. A new loop in the familiar Hamburg Reservoir area. Rated moderate for hills. Lunch at C.J. Hummel’s Restaurant in Lenhartsville afterward.

Saturday April 17, 2010 - Turkey Hill Trail

6 miles

This will be a loop hike, the first part will be on the Turkey Hill Trail which goes past some farms, through wooded areas, up and down several hills with some views of the Susquehanna River. Then we will descend to an old railroad bed and return along a level trail next to the river. A small amount of bushwhacking will be required. For those who would like an easier pace, a walk out and back along the river is an option. We will plan to stop to eat on the way back for those interested. Drive is approximately 45 minutes from the meeting place. Trail is located near Washington Boro in Lancaster County.

Saturday March 27, 2010 - Let's Try Again! -Struble Trail & Dowlin Forge Park, Chester County

Approx 5-6 Miles (Hopefully without SNOW this time!)

This is a RESCHEDULE of the Feb 13 hike that was snowed out; Rich graciously suggested trying a this again instead of his hike at Green Lane. Four people showed up on Feb 13 and we ended up on Thun Trail instead for about 100 feet and making "snow angels" before we gave up! So here goes...

Take a pleasant walk along the beautiful Brandywine Creek in Chester County on the Struble
Bike-Hike trail and see historic remnants of the Dowlin Forge in Uwchlan Township. Car pooling is suggested because of limited parking. We’ll hike and then reflect on the sights seen during lunch in the Chester County area.

5 miles

We will road hike around Womelsdorf and countryside. We will see the former brick plant, the
town park, Bethany Children’s Home and the new ball fields. Fairly level hike that can be done in

Sunday February 14, 2010 - Arts, Park, & Symphony in Allentown, Part III

A 1.5 mile loop walk
Loop through the Allentown Park at 8th Street bridge, then returning to the Arts
Walk, Art Museum (free) and then enjoying the 3pm Allentown Symphony concert followed by a
“brew” at the Allentown Brewworks.
Note: Allentown Symphony Hall, 23 N. 6th St..
Costs:
Concert Tickets: hikers receive 10% discount (mention this) at box office 610-432-6715.
Brewworks is at 812 W. Hamilton St – 10% discount with concert ticket.
Parking and Art Museum are both free. Hiking wear is fine.
